thoughts from the shampoo

yes i know it sounds strange but i do love the messages they put for us to read on products sometimes…like in greece we have a make of chocolate croissants called Five a Day, I mean really what does that say to us as consumers we should be eating 5 of these a day? Have they magically become one of our five a day like baked beans or a glass of orange juice, my latest hilarious re-entry into English culture.  It might not even be 5 anyway here seeing as every country has their own recommended number, England’s being quite low at 5 I suppose they assumed we couldn’t cope with any more but seeing as breakie seems to have taken care of two couldn’t we have managed some more, why are they always underestimating us? And besides what about our mental health? Why isn’t it also 5 new words a day or listen to five new songs a day or say something nice to people 5 times a day? And can a can of deodorant encapsulate the smells of Africa, I mean why do we fall for such rubbish? And then there’s my shampoo bottle claiming for me what I want, need and the results of such.  It got me thinking as it does in the shower how something seemingly so simple could be so overwhelming…what do i want, what do i need and what are going to be the results.  Seeing as im currently in the middle of a move from teaching jobs and countries this seems even more significant how would i finish those as the big picture cannot be ignored by daily routines or unbreakable commitments… but really we should all think about these things everyday shouldn’t we? What do we want and is it really protected hair from hair enemies, yes can you believe it  actually used the word enemy? I’m still figuring out how to finish mine but the questions are always at the forefront of my mind rather than the back.  Posed husband same questions…the response…

I want…. tomato ketchup

I need…a poo

Result…a mess

at least one of us obviously has things figured out!

thoughts from the shower

the joys of shared living whilst waiting to move-arguing about where the pile of bowls should go in the cupboard and where the ham goes in the fridge, which is usually so full it involves careful positioning and repositioning in that is feels like a round out of the Krypton factor or The Crystal Maze. (another unanswered question of my life- why did they never manage to collect more gold tokens?) They do say it’s always the little things, yes they do say…annoyingly. So the shower has always been my daily place of thought but has lately become even more of a sanctuary (and it’s the best place to keep warm as this island’s temperatures plummet to 14 degrees:)
And i was thinking about all the people around me at the moment who are about to take exams and how they are doubting themselves so much, much more than customary exam nerves and healthy anxiety.  Self doubt and questioning aside these guys are capable of great things and although no one likes a person who blows their own trumpet their doubt is spiralling them into a Saul Bass style panic where they have lost all sense of logical perspective.  Enter my job: what Alexandra Levit from the Wall Street Journal describes as the cheerleader with ‘objective perspective’, don’t worry i don’t have the pom poms, although i did always like the socks.  Don’t we all need our own cheerleader?

raining cats and dogs

the little anorak girl has a new shiny z key and is now looking for some things to keep her dry as she heads off to a place where it rains practically everyday. (no, it’s not england) (not seattle either) It’s gonna be hot. it’s worrying how you can lose so much time of your life looking for rainwear…. and how so much of it either fits into the category of scary old lady or fetish.  wasn’t entirely prepared for PVC clear bloomers I must admit but as they say whatever flicks your switch (and it appears that the light is on and burning brightly for clear PVC lovers everywhere).  Did manage to find gorgeous cute polka dot mannittoni raincoat, fitted tailoring, swing coat and love the hood.  Then went vintage and minus model, whose worryingly minus her top, this 60s retro polka dot  is just as cute and in perfect condition…                                                                                                                from ohsandra, san francisco

remember my grandmother having the funny rainhats too but certainly don’t remember them being as cool as these…

which hitchcock tonight?

you know the anorak girl she loves hitchcock…and naturally as such she got a few more of the collection for christmas presents. Now of course she’s realising she should have got a new laptop instead seeing as the z key has already being lost to the gods of the vacuum cleaner’s suction power, it would appear the ‘N’ key and space bar are now on the way out too.  thought it was my typing and wine at first but the keys seem to be slowly going…

anyway back to hitchcock… ‘rope’ was the film of choice as it reminds me of the academic and philosophical arguments of Dionysian in Donna Tartt’s ‘The Secret History’ ‘and the so called intellectual thrills of murder in the film. The ensemble cast and fluid filming made it every bit a stage play, if rather different from the original play written by Patrick Hamiliton in 1929 . Have to agree with the critics though that it did seem a bit sterile as the homosexual undertones of the original play were no longer undertones: in fact they were more completely white washed…it did prompt a long debate about Nietzsche though with my other half: the philosophy graduate. i think we actually agreed though…pretty monumental in itself really. so will it be the birds next…

thunder storms and hitchcock…

what better than to cosy up and watch hitchcock’s rear window while the storm continues outside…especially after getting wet in it countless times today whilst trying to get some shots with the old faithful slr at a couple of  beaches.  This included some tricky avoiding of lightning strikes of abandoned beach parasol poles, whichI was resolved to use in the shots.   left the digital today to return to old faithful bulky pentax. there is still something about the mystery and anticipation of wating to see what the photo will come out like and if it comes out at all rather than just flicking through on your digital.   found some fun pieces too on etsy to match my hitchcock, stormy day:
